By CCN: As HBO subscribers heaved a collective sigh of disappointment following the latest episode in Game of Thrones’ final season trainwreck, it became clear what diehard fans have suspected since the end of season 6 – the writers have run out of ideas.

Season 8 is so awful that more than 600,000 diehard fans (and counting) signed a Change.org petition demanding that HBO remake the entirety of S8.

But how much would that cost?

Why HBO Needs to Remake Game of Thrones Season 8

First, let’s revisit what went wrong.

Instead of writing a final season that befits the rich characters we’ve come to know and love in the past seven seasons of HBO’s hit show, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have Game of Thrones careening towards a car crash of a finale that lead actor Kit Harrington freely admitted was disappointing, and that star members of the cast seem pretty down about, as the three-minute video below demonstrates.

It’s alright Kit, we don’t blame you; in fact, we’re on your side. It’s the writers that need to be sent to the wall.

So on the off chance that HBO sees the petition to remake season 8 and actually listens, how much would it cost to bring back the excitement, intricate characters, and plot we’ve come to know and love?

$150 million.

HBO Could Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 for $150 Million

According to the Daily Telegraph, HBO spent a whopping $15 million per episode to film season 8 on a total budget of $90 million. To remake S8 the right way, the writers probably need to stretch the show out to 10 episodes, so by those numbers, we’re looking at a cool $150 million, or thereabouts, to start over.

Let’s do it.

The Case for Remaking Season 8 with 10 Episodes

Ten episodes would be perfect.

The last time we had a 10-episode season (season 6), we hit “peak Thrones,” with the Battle of the Bastards topping it off.

Ten episodes would give HBO and the new writers (I don’t think we’d be inviting has-beens D.B. Weiss and David Benioff back, and besides, they’ll be plenty busy ruining Star Wars) so much more time to play with – 170 minutes more than the 430-minute S8 that will hopefully find its way to the Hollywood trash bin.

With that much time and an inflated CGI budget, Jon could give his direwolf Ghost a proper goodbye, instead of this awkward parting:

HBO could bring in a fully-fledged military tactician and strategist to explain how medieval-era sieges and battles work.

For example, if you’re guarding your city against the hordes of Unsullied, Northmen, and Dothraki (didn’t they all die in episode 3?), it might be a good idea to keep your 20,000 Golden Company troops inside the city walls.

That didn’t turn out well.

They could hire a few extra assistants to make sure coffee cups weren’t left lying about all over the set.

Queen Cersei, the embodiment of absolute evil for the past seven seasons, could get a few more lines and a more compelling character arc than staring out of a window and tip-toeing around Cleganebowl.
