When it comes to love, I’ve been changing lives for over 25 years.

Even before I officially launched Janis Spindel Serious Matchmaking in New York City in 1993, I had a bazillion male friends I’d fix up with women. In fact, there was an eight-month window where I managed to get 14 guys I knew all engaged — and keep in mind, this was pre-internet!

My eldest daughter and business partner, Carly, and I call ourselves “serious” matchmakers because we only work with commitment-minded men. Arm candy, trophy wives, gold diggers — that’s not the business we’re in. Our goal is to find our clients their perfect match with a combination of beauty, brains, body, balance, and the “it” factor that only experts like ourselves can spot. If that means traveling the world, we’ll do just that — and we have.

In 2018, we set out on a worldwide love tour that took us across America and nine European countries for a total of seven weeks in search of the ideal match for one of our clients who was seeking the Nordic women of his dreams. Between our fee and expenses, it cost him $1.5 million dollars — but in the end, we found his future bride while she was vacationing in Ibiza on a girls’ trip.

There are plenty of matchmakers out there, but we are the Rolls Royce of matchmakers.

When it comes to finding love for our clients, we’re relentless and leave no stone unturned.

Together we have a track record of 4,012 combined marriages. With all those marriages come lots of babies — and after the parents, I’m often the first to hold them.

We cater to C-suite executives, politicians, celebrities, and leaders in tech and on Wall Street including lots of men on the Fortune and Forbes 400 & 500. These types of men are used to outsourcing everything from personal trainers to chauffeurs to stylists, so it’s not out of the ordinary for them to outsource someone like us to find them a lifetime of happiness.

We have a private investigator I’ve worked with for ages who runs a full-fledged background check on all prospective clients before we take them on.

New clients pay a signing fee up front for our services starting at $65,000 and up, plus expenses.

Our fee depends on how much work is involved and whether or not we have to travel.

Once we’ve found our client their match and they’re either together for 12 months, living together, or engaged, they are contractually obligated to pay us a finder’s fee, which is the same rate as their signing fee.

You’d be surprised how many people try to avoid paying us that finder’s fee after we find them the love of their life. It’s really disgusting actually. One father hired us to find his son a wife because he desperately wanted a grandson. He even promised us a $10,000 bonus if he had a grandson. Obviously, we had no control over the sex of a baby but we knew we could find his son a wife. It wasn’t easy though.

First, we had to give the guy a complete makeover. We had to outfit him with a new wardrobe, have his teeth fixed, and get him hair plugs. In the end, we found him a wife and the couple ended up having twins, a boy and a girl. After all that work, he stiffed us on our finder’s fee and the bonus he promised. I wish I could say this was the only instance but it’s not. Sometimes people have even pretended to break up so they don’t have to pay us.

We would never take on a client if we felt we couldn’t immediately deliver on what he wanted in a match. Most of our contracts are for 12-month period, but usually, we send a client one or two matches within two weeks and from there it depends on people’s schedules and chemistry. We recently signed two new clients and they both matched with the first woman we introduced them to — one and done!

We don’t advertise, since we’re highly selective with who we work with. We always want to be in a position where we can pick and choose who we want to work with and have the ability to control our own schedule.

Before the pandemic, we’d go out three to five nights a week and could scout up to 450 people in that time.

We go everywhere — from Fashion Week to the Oscars to the Grammys — and when we travel our clients fly us first-class or on private jets to the finest hotels.

Wherever we go, we’re always on the lookout, starting up conversations, giving out our cards, and telling people who we are and what we do. Whether it’s at Soul Cycle, walking down the street, or in an elevator, we’re always scouting.

People save my cards. I’ve had people call me years after I’ve given them my card. You just never know when you’ll need it or who knows who. I once gave my card to a male celebrity in the Hamptons who was married. He saved my card and when his marriage didn’t work out, I was his first call.

While our clients are only men, we do keep a comprehensive database of female candidates who we refer to as our members.

Women submit a $25 application with a series of questions ranging from their height and weight to how well-traveled they are, what languages they speak, whether or not they have advanced degrees, and if they have or want children.

If we’re interested in an applicant, we’ll conduct an in-person interview-style meeting with them for a one-time non-refundable fee of $250 to $1,250 based on whether it’s a small group meeting, a one-on-one meeting, or one with both me and Carly.

From there, we won’t make an introduction to one of our clients unless we’re certain it’s a perfect match. Otherwise, for their fee, a woman will remain in our database forever.

The pandemic has sent droves of women our way from all over the world, looking to join our database.

Each new candidate is better than the next. Everyone is working from home and lonely, spending hours online.

What we do is more than just work. We’ve built our business based on love, and It’s a family ordeal. My younger daughter, who is 22, says she doesn’t want to go into the business. But that’s what Carly said, too, and 11 eleven years later she told me she was ready to join.

As for my husband, he’s our chief operating officer, SEO guru, and handles everything on the back end for us. He’s totally onboard. After all, we’ve been married nearly 39 years ago ever since I spotted him in a friend’s office and was told “He’s not for you… .”

What can I say? When I know, I know.
